A thought provoking article on the BBC website today details the real life challenges facing young referees. Their stories are alarming, stories of abuse on a weekly basis, mostly verbal but on occasion becoming physical.
The article does prompt thought about whether we do enough to protect referee’s from what can be perceived as bullying, from top to bottom of the football spectrum. Having young referee’s going home crying or fearing for their safety is pretty damming and does beg the question, how long will the game retain referee’s if we allow these attitudes towards them to continue?
Take a moment to read the article, please share it among your clubs and ask yourself whether your team can do more to ensure the enjoyment of everyone, participants and spectators, when your team plays at the weekend
