NWYFL is pleased to announce that in 2019, the league is supporting local charity, SMASH.
SMASH (Swindon Mentoring and Self-Help) support 9-19 years old build self-confidence, resilience and self-esteem.
SMASH is based in Swindon and has 7 members of staff and over 70 volunteers. They partner young people with trusted adult volunteers for one to one mentoring and also run group work sessions.
Since its formation as an independent charity in 1999, it has helped over 2000 children – this year is its 20th anniversary. The charity has recently received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services (the MBE’s for charities), and were also awarded a highly commended honour for Inspire the House of Common’s Award
The objectives of the charity are to help over 100 children per year and recruit 20 new volunteers. Funding is currently through grants and community donations. An increase in community donations will help SMASH provide Swindon with a service that helps our local communities thrive.
SMASH, with its focus on children and young people, is a natural fit to be the NWYFL’s supported charity for 2019. A number of events will be held during the calendar year, both to raise funds for the charity, and of equal importance, to raise awareness.
“The NWYFL Committee are very happy to announce that our chosen charity for 2019 is SMASH, the leading Youth mentoring service in Swindon. SMASH provide such a valuable service to children in our community, with passionate volunteers creating time to give these youngsters a place to turn and someone to talk to at a time of need. The League look forward to working with Helen and her team to help highlight this Youth project among our clubs and participants, whilst raising much needed funds”
